In February 2024, the Fort Yuma Quechan Indian Tribe launched a public campaign calling on President Joe Biden to protect more than 390,000 acres of the Tribe’s homelands located in Imperial County, California as the Kw'tsán National Monument (pronounced Kwatsáan). The Fort Yuma Quechan Indian Tribe is a federally recognized sovereign Tribal Nation that borders California, Arizona, and Mexico, though their ancestral homelands extend beyond current reservation boundaries. The lands included within the proposed monument are currently managed by the Bureau of Land Management and contain cultural, ecological, recreational, scenic, and historic values that the Fort Yuma Tribe is asking to be preserved for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.

Listen to the podcast episode to hear from multiple generations of Indigenous leaders who are working to protect this special and culturally significant area for generations to come.
